The windows of an 1890 farmhouse
Fourteen windows and their shutters restored rather than replaced: repaired timber, slim insulating glazing and the original charm intact.

The owners of this farmhouse in the Aravis had been told to replace everything with PVC. They came to us with a simple question: can they be saved?
The assessment
Of fourteen windows, twelve had sound timber under the paint. Only the sills, rotted by water, had to be remade in larch. The last two were copied exactly.
The restoration
Clara took each window apart, stripped it, replaced the damaged parts, fitted slim insulating glass into the original rebates, then repainted it with linseed oil paint. The shutters got new boards and their forged hinges were cleaned.
