A spiral staircase for a manor house
Three floors, a continuous steam-bent handrail and balusters carved one by one: our longest project, and our favourite.

In a manor house in the old town, the original staircase had disappeared in the 1960s, replaced by a plain straight flight. The new owners wanted to give it back its soul.
The design
Pierre and Julien surveyed the stairwell to the millimetre, then drew the helix full size on the workshop floor, as joiners have done for centuries. The balusters echo a pattern found in an old photograph of the house.
Making and fitting
Four months of work, including three weeks to steam-bend the handrail from glued oak laminations. The staircase was dry-assembled at the workshop, taken apart, then rebuilt on site in a week.
