Six metres of walnut bookcase with slatted backs that let light through between the living room and the study.
This couple of avid readers wanted to separate the living room from the study without building a wall. The bookcase had to hold three thousand books and let the light through.
The design
A double-sided, floor-to-ceiling bookcase whose backs are made of vertical slats two centimetres apart. Depending on the time of day, light from the lake draws stripes on the floor.
Making and fitting
Nearly four hundred walnut slats were planed, sanded and oiled one by one. The 32 mm shelves will not sag under the weight of the books.
